A delightful couple wanted something special that would include kids from prior marriages in their ceremony. Both had kids from previous marriages and they wanted to make all of them (two boys) feel special, included and safe. Over a few emails, we came with the following script. While this couple actually wanted to make a pledge to the kids, even simply giving something to the kids will do. The boys were delighted with the attention and were red with joy, and I would recommend this kind of activity to anyone getting married who already has kids old enough to understand what’s going on and yet young enough need this kind of assurance. Also notice the introduction of the whole family at the end, with new and old last names, as some did not change their names...

Hello and welcome!

We gathered together here in the presence of friends and family to celebrate the love which Bride and Groom have for each other, to give social recognition to their decision to commit their lives and accept each other completely, to learn how to help and understand each other, to build a family, and together, to travel through life.

If any of you has anything to say that might change their minds… they… don’t want to hear it However, they do want to hear from you, that you will always be their friends, and will always support and encourage them as they discover the commitment and dedication needed to make marriage work. And that is why you are here today.

Bride , "Will you have this man to be your wedded husband, to live together in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love him, comfort him, honor him, and keep him, in sickness and in health; and forsaking all others keep thee only unto him so long as you both shall live?"

Answer: I will

"Will you have this woman to be your wedded wife, to live together in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love her, comfort her, honor her, and keep her, in sickness and in health; and forsaking all others keep thee only unto her so long as you both shall live?"

Answer: I will

Do we have rings?

Groom as you place this ring on Bride ‘s hand, please repeat after me

"I, Groom, promise to love and cherish you Bride. To give you strength, to help you in good times and in bad. To respect our individuality, to make our home one of love and understanding. I will be open and honest with you. I join you in seeking the fulfillment of our lives. I promise to be faithful to you, giving you all of myself, all of my tomorrows, all of my life."

Next, Bride & Groom will present rings to Lilboy and Bigboy, as a symbol of commitment to being the best parents they can be for them, a symbol of love and concern, in good school grades and in bad, with runny noses or dry ones, with brand new pants or torn in the knee, whatever life may bring, so long as they all shall live. (change this if you don’t like it… I was having a little fun)

Rev: Groom and Bride, please repeat after me:

To younger boy:

"Lilboy, we give you this ring as a token of our love and devotion to you and as a symbol of our faithfulness to our family."

To older boy:

" Bigboy, we give you this ring as a token of our love and devotion to you and as a symbol of our faithfulness to our family."

Groom, you may now kiss the bride – I meant a real kiss.

I proud to present to you Mr. and Mrs. NEWLASTNAME <<applause>>

Please everyone, welcome the new family, Bigboy NEWLASTNAME, Lilboy NEWLASTNAME, Bride LASTNAME and Groom LASTNAME <<applause>> and then we need everyone to come over to hug, kiss and take pictures. Let’s start with the front row…
